Occupational Hygiene and Safety Within Printing and Packaging

Envirocare were commissioned by a number of regional manufacturing locations within a national organisation to design and carry out a regular occupational hygiene & safety monitoring programme.

Printing

The Problem

Envirocare was commissioned by a national printing and packaging organisation to design and carry out a regular occupational hygiene & safety monitoring programme. The aim was to comply with HSE Legislation and address any site specific concerns that arose from the managers and staff.

The Solution

Envirocare created and carried out a regular occupational hygiene and safety monitoring programme for a number of regional manufacturing locations which included:

  • Fire risk assessments
  • Trade effluent discharge monitoring
  • COSHH assessments where appropriate
  • DSEAR risk assessments relating to solvent storage and ink stores.
  • UV light testing of stray emissions from the printing presses and driers
  • Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) Testing for extraction of hazardous substances from machines
  • Noise monitoring and reporting including the assessment of printing presses and of cutting and folding and gluing machines
  • Workplace Air Monitoring and reporting for substances including solvents, ink fly and ink vapours from UV cured inks, and general nuisance dust levels.

Part of this occupational hygiene & safety monitoring programme involved an annual monitoring schedule for personal exposure for the staff at a number of locations to ensure company compliance with legislative guidance. An additional benefit is that it provides information for auditing and quality systems.

Envirocare worked in close liaison with the regional site contact to ensure that appropriate bespoke monitoring was carried out. The aims were to comply with HSE Legislation and address any site specific concerns that arose from the managers and staff.

Envirocare were keen to develop tailored packages for each site to avoid any unnecessary expenditure from the client on monitoring which was not required.

After each visit Envirocare provided detailed technical reports for the site which were specific to their environment and were clear and easy to understand. Envirocare worked with the client to design and recommend improvements that are practical and then repeated the occupational hygiene & safety monitoring to assess the effectiveness of the actions.
