Celebrating Carl Renshaw’s career in Occupational Hygiene

Envirocare is proud to celebrate the career of Carl Renshaw, who retired in 2024 after over four decades in the occupational hygiene sector. We are delighted that Carl has chosen to continue sharing his expertise with us on a flexible basis, and we look forward to him continuing to share his fantastic insights and experience for years to come.

As Carl steps into retirement, we are celebrating his career. His dedication, knowledge, and leadership have inspired countless professionals and will continue to influence the industry for years to come.

A journey rooted in mining and ventilation

Carl’s career began at the age of 16, when he joined the National Coal Board at Bentinck Colliery in 1981. With a keen interest in mining ventilation, Carl pursued a City & Guilds certificate in Mine Ventilation Engineering at Nottingham Trent Polytechnic. His hard work and dedication paid off in 1985, when he was awarded a City & Guilds Medal for achieving the highest national exam results in ventilation engineering.

Carl continued to excel academically and professionally, earning an advanced diploma in Mine Ventilation Engineering while simultaneously applying his knowledge in the field. From 1987 to 1994, Carl held central roles at Welbeck, Gedling, and Thoresby collieries, in addition to Nottinghamshire Group HQ Ventilation Engineer, where he was responsible for  mine ventilation and the control of mine gases, airborne dust, heat, and humidity, crucial to everyone’s safety.

Transition to Occupational Hygiene and leadership

The 1990s marked a significant transition in Carl’s career as British Coal underwent privatisation. After being made redundant in 1995, Carl redirected his expertise toward occupational hygiene and safety, earning several qualifications including the NEBOSH National Diploma in Safety & Health and becoming an associate member of the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS).

Carl co-founded Arromax Environmental Consultants Ltd in 1995, where he served as the Director of Health, Safety, Ventilation, and Occupational Hygiene. This venture laid the foundation for Carl’s entrepreneurial journey, which culminated in the establishment of SI Environmental Ltd in 2000. As Managing Director, Carl led the company for over two decades, delivering expert services in health, safety, and occupational hygiene.

Commitment to continuous learning

Carl’s dedication to lifelong learning is evident in his rigorous educational background. From achieving workplace and environmental noise, and hand-arm vibration risk assessment competencies, to completing an MSc in Occupational Hygiene at the University of Manchester, where he was awarded the BOHS Book Prize for the highest marks in written examinations, Carl consistently sought to expand his knowledge and expertise.

Legacy and retirement

In 2022, SI Environmental Ltd was acquired by the Cura-Terrae group, the parent company of Envirocare, marking a new chapter in Carl’s career as a Senior Occupational Hygienist. Over the past two years, Carl has continued to mentor and lead within the Envirocare team, ensuring the continued delivery of high-quality services.

We extend our gratitude to Carl for his exceptional service and wish him a fulfilling and well-deserved retirement.
