What Exactly Is Environmental Compliance?

The definition of environmental compliance is to conform to any environmental regulations, laws plus any other regulations or standards. You may believe this sounds rather complicated but it’s not. In fact, it’s nothing more than what you should be doing already to be running your company legally.

Environmental Compliance

In recent years environmental compliance has become a big concern and it will only get bigger as concerns for the environment grow. Corporations and businesses have therefore got to be more cautious than ever before, not only for Environmental Compliance but also to Tighten Their Corporate Social Responsibility, especially since the stringency and number of environmental standards have increased recently.

These laws and standards are meant to reflect the concern that exists in the community, our collective priorities. They are meant to reflect our beliefs and values. Businesses who make emissions to air, land and water are regulated by the Environment Agency under strict European and UK laws, to protect both the environment and human health.

If your company does make emissions to air, land or water then you could very well need a permission to operate under environmental compliance. This permission usually comes in the form of a permit, which usually requires you to monitor your emissions.

Make it part of your business practice to constantly review how your every day operations are complying or not complying. Mechanisms for ensuring environmental compliance can include civil or criminal penalties, incorporating the provision of false or misleading information to obtain approval, which is very badly regarded.

Those who do not comply can also be subject to remediation orders and determinations which must repair or mitigate any environmental damage resulting from a contravention. All of this is far more expensive than monitoring your emissions to air, land or water.

MCERTS is the UK Environment Agency’s Monitoring Certification Scheme which provides the framework for businesses to meet quality requirements.
