What Are Spirometry Tests?
Spirometry Tests (Lung Function Tests) aim to detect early damage to lung function from exposure to respiratory sensitisers and other substances that have the potential to cause serious ill health.
For example, silicosis may be caused by exposure to respirable crystalline silica in the stone cutting industry.
Baseline testing can be an early detection mechanism and the screening records may also be used to reduce liabilities in respect of industrial claims for compensation.
Why Are Spirometry Tests Important?
Occupational asthma and many other forms of workplace based lung problems are preventable. Exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals or dust is very common in workplaces. That’s why minimizing the risk of both employees and employers is important.
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (2002) (COSHH) state “If the risk assessment indicates that there is a risk to the health of employees who are, or are liable to be, exposed to potentially harmful substances, the employer shall ensure that such employees are placed under suitable health surveillance”
Spirometric Testing and appropriate occupational health management is used to:
+ Help comply with COSHH Regulations
+ Provide early detection of ill health and problem areas
+ Reduce the sickness absence levels
+ Reduce the liabilities in respect of industrial compensation claims
